What to Pack for Your Trip to Cusco

Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level and has a semi-dry climate. This can be challenging for those not used to high altitudes and dry weather.

To avoid missing out on outdoor activities due to rain, the best time to visit the city is during the dry season (June, July, and August), which is actually winter.

During this period, the weather is cold, with temperatures ranging from 0ºC to 18ºC, and extremely dry. However, due to the altitude, the sun can still be very strong and burn the skin like in summertime.

Before planning your trip to Cusco, it’s important to pack the following items to protect yourself from these harsh conditions:

  1. Both light and heavy clothing to layer up
  2. Thermal top and bottoms
  3. Sunscreen
  4. A high-quality moisturizer suitable for very dry weather
  5. Lip butter balm to prevent dry and chapped lips – normal limp balm won’t do. Believe me lol.
  6. Nasal moisturizer to prevent dryness and potential bleeding
  7. A hat that provides coverage for both your head and neck, due to the intense sun exposure
  8. A scarf
  9. A small hiking backpack for outdoor activities and the Machu Picchu train trip (Please note that only small carry-on luggage is allowed on the train)
  10. Face masks, as the pervasive smells of diesel and gasoline coming from cars can be suffocating

💡 Last but not least, it is strongly recommended to have travel insurance when visiting Peru, as altitude sickness and the potential for injuries during hiking and trekking activities pose a significant risk.

With all these items packed, you can enjoy your time here comfortably.
