12 Top Tips for Staying Healthy in Cusco

Cusco is a fantastic place to visit, but it’s important to take some precautions to ensure you have a great experience.

To prevent the altitude and dry weather from spoiling your days here, I recommend checking out my previous post “What to Pack for Your Trip to Cusco” for a smooth experience, especially if you are coming during the winter.

In addition to packing the right items, adopting certain habits during your stay in Cusco can help protect your health and well-being.

Here’s a list of tips:

1. **Acclimatize on Your First Day**: Take at least your first day in Cusco to acclimatize. Avoid scheduling any intense activities, eat light meals (preferably without red meat), and avoid alcohol.

2. **Stay Hydrated**: Drink plenty of water throughout your stay. The semi-dry weather can quickly dehydrate you, leading to headaches and discomfort.

3. **Moisturize**: Keep your body, face, and lips moisturized at least twice a day.

4. **Gentle Cleansing**: Use a body wash instead of a soap bar, as it’s gentler on your skin and helps prevent dryness.

5. **Combat Dry Air**: If your bedroom lacks a humidifier, sleep with a basin of water beside you. This can help alleviate the discomfort caused by dry air.

6. **Nasal Relief**: Keep a nasal spray handy in case the water basin isn’t sufficient.

7. **Face Mask if Allergic**: If you have allergies, consider wearing a face mask while walking through the busy streets of Cusco, as vehicle pollution can be irritating.

8. **Protect Against the Sun**: Always apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses and a hat, even on cloudy days. The high altitude increases the risk of sunburn.

9. **Coca Candies**: Carry coca candies with you, as they can help alleviate breathlessness when walking up on the city’s steep slopes.

10. **Post-Meal Activity**: Avoid walking up slopes right after a full meal, as you may feel more tired and breathless.

11. ** Boost your body for the Heights**: Drink coca tea and take altitude sickness pills when hiking to higher altitudes.

12. **Save Intense Activities for Later**: Plan your most intense activities, such as hiking the Colorful Mountain, for the later days of your trip when your body is better acclimatized to the altitude.

By following these tips, you’re sure to have a fun and enjoyable time in Cusco!
