After nearly three months in Cusco, I would like to share my impressions of this lovely city. I hope the following points provide insight into some of the unique characteristics of this part of Peru.
Let’s get started!
1. The cost of living is quite low. You can enjoy a full meal for just 7 soles (around $1.85 USD).
2. The locals, known as cusqueños, typically have a set menu for lunch that includes a soup or another starter along with a main course.
3. They have a strong preference for chicken and potatoes, and you’ll find many “pollerias,” which are restaurants that serve only chicken dishes.

4. Although there are not many garbage bins throughout the city, outside of the main squares, I’ve found it to be cleaner than many other places that are overrun with them.
5. Payments are primarily made in cash (efectivo), as many places don’t accept card payments.
6. Drinks are often served at room temperature, and it’s common for many establishments to lack ice.
7. People in Cusco use a sieve to filter their coffee!

8. While walking along the main streets, you will frequently encounter women offering massages for 20 soles. The phrase “masaje, masaje” is likely to linger in your mind if you stay here long enough.
9. There seems to be nearly as many street dogs as there are people in Cusco.
10. Locals enjoy soup daily, usually without any bread. There were times when I wished I could go to a bakery to grab a piece of bread to accompany my lunch.
11. The supply of toilet paper can be limited. In paid public restrooms, you receive some after paying, and in shopping malls, only one roll is typically available in each restroom, rather than a roll in every stall.
12. Taxi drivers are generally honest; they have never overcharged me, and their rates are comparable to those of Uber.
