12 Common Obstacles in Emotional Healing

Emotional healing is one of the most powerful journeys a person can take, but it’s also one of the easiest to get lost in.

After 10 years in this journey, I’ve experienced the same setbacks over and over — not because I was “doing it wrong,” but because the wounded inner child (our emotional center formed in childhood) is brilliant at self-protection and avoidance.

All 12 obstacles below are certainly harmful, but if you can avoid numbers 6 and 7, your experience will be much smoother and more rewarding from the get-go.

Here are the biggest hurdles I’ve faced along the way.

1. Where We Often Miss the Mark

1. Trying to “fix” our inner child instead of listening to them

People approach their inner child like a problem to be solved.
But the inner child doesn’t need fixing — they need witnessing, validation, and reparenting.

2. Rushing the process

Inner child healing is not an intellectual exercise. It’s somatic, emotional, and layered.

Trying to “hurry up and heal” usually re-creates the environment the child grew up in: pressure, urgency, and emotional neglect.

3. Confusing insight with healing

Many adults believe,

“I understand my past, so I’m healed.”
Awareness is only step one.
Healing requires feeling, processing, and embodiment, not just logic.

4. Only doing the ‘cute’ parts of emotional healing
