The Essential Mindset To Make The Best Of Therapy

Psychoanalysis and psychotherapy are not mere treatments for mental health. They offer a portal to our souls.

During our sessions, we have the opportunity to:

  • Heal from traumas
  • Address developmental delays
  • Discover our blind spots
  • Mindfully confront our struggles
  • Transform our potential into achievements
  • Continue maturing instead of merely aging

The extent of our improvements is immeasurable, as it relies on our willingness to engage deeply and the therapist’s skill in guiding us through this journey.

THE LIMITATIONS OF THERAPY

Despite its significant benefits, therapy, like any tool, has its limits. Therefore, it’s essential to supplement it with additional resources, such as:

  • Healthy relationships
  • A balanced diet and lifestyle
  • Regular physical activity
  • Adequate sleep
  • A sense of purpose in life

It’s the interplay of these resources and our commitment to our personal growth that makes the magic happen.

THE IDEAL MINDSET FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

In my previous post, Finding The Right Therapist in 5 Simple Steps,” I discussed the initial preparations for your therapeutic journey.

Now, let’s explore the most effective mindset for success. To achieve the best outcomes in therapy, you should:

1. **Be Goal-Oriented**

It is crucial to set both mid-term and long-term goals for your therapy.

This approach helps optimize your treatment and prevents the common feeling of stagnation.

Let’s be honest: for the therapist, the longer you take to heal, the better; while for you, it’s the other way around.

Examples of goals include:

  • Overcoming a divorce and redirecting your life
  • Navigating a mid-life crisis
  • Address the causes of depression to heal it
  • Finding purpose in life
  • Managing the transition into motherhood

2. Be Honest with Yourself and Your Therapist

To ensure you get the most out of your treatment, it’s important to:

  • Speak your truth
  • Ask difficult questions
  • Express any frustrations you may have with the approach
  • Take an active role in the process
  • Accept feedback

💡 Don’t waste your time and money trying to play it cool, as this could significantly impact your results. Openness and vulnerability are vital for thriving in therapy.

For example, I experienced a situation early in my treatment when my therapist frequently rescheduled our sessions due to her own personal issues.

Although it wasn’t her intention, her behavior triggered feelings of disrespect and neglect from my childhood.

After weeks of rumination, I decided to speak up.

When I finally shared my feelings with her, she immediately apologized and made a commitment not to reschedule our sessions in the future. It meant a lot to me because I felt heard and respected.

This situation was the perfect scenario for beginning my healing process.

3. **Be Patient with the Ups and Downs**

It’s common to go through periods in therapy where progress seems stagnant.

Don’t give up during these times; life will inevitably bring new challenges.

Instead of stopping therapy, consider reducing the frequency of your sessions.

4. **Foster Accountability**

Acknowledging your flaws, mistakes, and inappropriate behavior makes you heal and grow much faster.

Focusing on your contributions to your reality, rather than blaming others, is empowering and enhances your social skills, including:

  • Self-awareness
  • Conflict resolution
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Resilience
  • Decision making
  • Problem-solving
  • Understanding others’ perspectives

For a fulfilling experience of healing and growth in life, invest in:

Goal setting

Honesty

Patience

Accountability

You won’t regret it! 🌹

  2. Sound advice. Those who presume from the outset of therapy no one will understand them, and no one can help them, set themselves up for failure.

    1. That’s true. Many people seek therapy to prove their problems are unsolvable, which is a kind of arrogance. Thank you for coming by. I love seeing you around. 🙂
