8 Powerful Habits to Keep Anxiety at Bay

Anxiety may knock—here’s how to stop giving it VIP access.

Anxiety is like that uninvited guest who shows up at your house wearing muddy shoes, plops on your couch, and refuses to leave.

We’ve all been there — heart racing before a presentation, brain spiraling at 3 a.m.

“Did I pay that bill? Did I say something weird at lunch in 2009?”

🔎 In my case, I often get a bit anxious before flying, and I can’t help but get stuck on this silly thought:

What if they find drugs in my luggage?”

Do I go around with drugs stashed in my luggage? Of course not, but my mind doesn’t know that yet! 🥴

While anxiety is part of being human, we can learn to quiet it down with the right habits and mindsets. Here’s how:

1. Concentrate on the Here and Now 🕰️

🛠️ Practice mindfulness.

Anxiety thrives on past regrets and future fears.

  • The antidote? Presence.
  • Try focusing on simple daily moments: the warmth of your shower, the smell of fresh coffee, the sound of leaves in the wind.

2. Rethink “What If?” Thinking 🌀

🛠️ Switch “What if it goes wrong?” to “What if it goes right?”

  • Anxiety feeds on negative news and gloomy thoughts. But you’re the one holding the remote.
  • When you feel your mind spinning, change the script: Imagine the best outcome instead of the worst.

3. Move That Energy 💃

🛠️ Practice Physical activity.

  • Anxiety is basically your body saying, “We’ve got extra energy to burn.”
  • Moving helps reset your nervous system. It doesn’t have to be the gym — dance in your kitchen, take a walk, stretch on the floor.

🔎 Have you ever notice how a 15-minute walk can make the world feel less overwhelming? Bonus points if you pet a dog along the way.

4. Talk to Yourself Like a Friend 💌

🛠️ Replace self-criticism with self-compassion.

  • Anxiety often comes with an inner critic yelling, “You’re not enough.”

🔎 Try this: respond as if you were talking to a friend. Use warmth, kindness, and encouragement.

5. Keep It Simple 🍃

🛠️ Break tasks into small steps.

Overwhelm fuels anxiety.

🔎 Shrink the mountain into tiny, doable hills.

6. Set News & Social Media Boundaries 📱

🛠️ Limit input overload.

Too much scrolling, too much bad news, too much “everyone has it together but me” can skyrocket anxiety.

🔎 Protect your mental space!

7. Breathe Like You Mean It 🌬️

🛠️ Practice calming breathwork.

  • When anxiety strikes, your body flips into fight-or-flight.
  • Deep breathing helps signal to your nervous system that you’re safe.

🔎 Try the “4-7-8 breath”: inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8.

Do this three times and notice your shoulders drop.

8. Celebrate Small Wins 🎉

🛠️ Focus on progress, not perfection.

  • Anxiety makes us believe we’re never doing enough.
  • Flip that script by noticing and celebrating small steps.

Sent that one email you’d been dreading? Victory!

Cooked instead of ordering takeout? Gold star!

🎯 You’re building resilience brick by brick!

🔁 Shift Your Mindset

Anxiety may not vanish overnight (and that’s okay). But with these habits and mindsets, you can stop it from running the show.

The goal isn’t to never feel anxious — it’s to recognize it, manage it, and move forward with more calm and confidence.

And the next time anxiety shows up at your door? You’ll know exactly how to show it the way out.

  3. I, myself, would add the habit of prayer. Scripture tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4: 6).

Christ, Himself, said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14; 27). For, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8: 31). Focusing on Him may not change our circumstances. But it changes our perspective. ❤
