One Less Prejudice in My Life

I’ve always been into dancing, starting to perform when I was about 4 or 5. But when it came to physical activity? Nah, I wasn’t a fan, especially of gyms.

In my mind, spending hours doing the same boring stuff on machines felt like torture. I mean, I compared weight training to dancing and thought dancing was way more fun.

But hitting 40 made me rethink all that.

This past April, I decided to join a gym that had a modern and cool vibe. Just that atmosphere alone helped lower my resistance.

On my registration day, I looked around and suddenly felt like I might actually enjoy this whole gym thing more than I thought. And boy, was I right.

My first day was quite the experience.

I arrived around 10 AM, feeling a bit out of place, which is typical for newcomers. I started with some stretching and then warmed up on the treadmill.

Can you believe I had never been on one before, and here I was at almost 40? I clung to the sidebars like my life depended on it, convinced I’d fall at any second.

When I finally stepped off, my body was swaying around, still adjusting to the movement.

I managed to get through my first workout and headed home feeling a mix of excitement and a little embarrassment for ever doubting something that turned out to be really good for me.

Now, I actually love hitting the gym. I go 3 times a week, and always leave feeling like a brand new person—refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle whatever the day throws my way.

Do I still think dancing is the best? For sure.
But I’ve definitely become more open to what might get me excited.

  1. Kudos for stretching and trying something new. I’ve never liked going to the gym but do try to keep active hiking, biking, and more.

I dance like Snoopy when no one’s watching, but I’m still where you were initially with going to a gym. It’s not the exercise so much as the “going to” part.
